I'm new to the forum and is like to inquire to people with actual experience owning these vehicles.
My friend Aaron has a 1980 orange chevette 4door hatch back with a manual transmission. He acquired it from his old room mate that was driving it regularly, one day it died on the highway and the old room mate said he could have it if he can pick it up from where it broke down.
I've been told the old room mate couldnt figure out how to get it running, with his lack of automotive experience he couldn't tell the difference between an intake manifold and an exhaust manifold.
A belt apparently wore out or snapped, So the old room mate bought one big belt and ran it over everything, crankshaft pulley cam pulley water pump pulley and the alternator, is what I've been told.
Aaron told me he got new belts for it and installed them, its been sitting for a year and just needs a battery to start.
Im wondering if it would be worth trying to get this vehicle from my friend aaron and get it running to use as a family car since my wife and I had our only car stolen a month ago and need a cheap car to get around. I havnt seen it yet to diagnose it myself, but if like to know what to look for when I do.
What could have caused it to break down regarding belt issues? Alternator? Water pump?
Is it worth fixing it up depending on what's wrong with it?
And how much should I offer to buy it for if it is worth getting it running?
Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance.
