Hello everyone!
I stumbled upon this forum earlier today and I was so relieved that someone has created a place to appreciate these cars. I am only 15, almost 16 actually, and I have my temps. I have been combing craigslist and everywhere else to find a decent Chevette for my dad and I to build. He was never fond of the Chevette, calling it a Shove-It or whatever. But I have always favored the underdog, partly because I view myself as one, and my school is tiny and any win we get is an upset (my Class of 2016 has about 85 students in it). Plus, I live in Northeast Ohio as an avid baseball player, golfer, bowler, Indians, Browns, and Cavs fan. Keeping with the theme of underdogs, that same logic has sort of translated into my love of cars as well. I fell in love with the T platform years ago, and then I also started appreciating the AMC Spirit/Eagle SX/4 and mid 80s GM J-Bodies as well. But this car is amazing, and I want to drive one in style. I really enjoy fuel economy and attempting to achieve the best MPG's, so I'm in the right place with the Chevette. Honestly the Chevette is probably too slow for my teenage liking, but I would like to save fuel. If I can find one with a T-5 in it, I can easily swap in a 2.5L Tech IV Iron Duke for a performance upgrade and keeping with fuel economy. The Iron Duke just has more parts and is probably a better engine in my opinion. My dad is an ex-mechanic but he still wrenches on any car he touches. I just finally proved to him that a Chevette would be a cool car to work on together and make it my own for cheap, and the cost of running it would be just as little. Alright, enough blab, I'm really happy I found this today. I really hope this forum grows and the appreciation for the GM T platform does too. My birthday is coming up a week from tomorrow, and with that money I plan on buying a Chevette project to have ready when I get my full license in June. Thanks for having me here, I like it already. I hope I can show off a new old car here soon.
Oh, I forgot. There's a Chevette right down the road from me that is buried in a bunch of farm equipment, which hasn't been touched in years. I'd like to ask the guy about it, but I don't know how. He has a for sale sign in a 1990s Grand Prix nearby, which hasn't been touched in just as long i think. It's a dark gray, with some surface rust on the hood, two doors. It's mid 80s for sure but I won't know until I ask the guy. How should I go about doing that?
Thanks for having me!
