So last year I swapped my automatic for a 4 speed. I used the older short tailshaft transmission. I was told that the crossmember was the same from the automatic to the four speed, I've also heard that it just needs be moved to the forward set of holes on the body. We only found one set of bolt holes in the body and the crossmember is two far back for the mount to bolt to the bracket that's bolted to the transmission, Right now that is extended back line up with the trans mount.
So what gives? are the 4speed and auto crossmembers different. It works fine the way it is now.I just want to eliminate an extra pair of bolts.

I can tell you that I have a 1985 T-5 cross-member, a 1981 4 speed cross-member and a 1984 auto cross-member. They are all substantially different.

THANK YOU!!!! Finally a real answer! Everybody's been saying for years that the auto and 4 speed cross-members are the same. I've never had two side by side for comparison. I just know mine obviously doesn't fit together.
Interested at all in selling your 4 speed cross-member? parts are getting pretty scarce here in NH. druggles85@hotmail.com
